Caraquet Cultural Capital 2009

On May 8th, 2003, Caraquet received, from Canadian Heritage, the distinction of being named the Cultural Capital of Canada for providing the community with its continual commitment to the development of arts and culture..

The Town of Caraquet is certainly a model to be followed in the development of arts and culture. In 1993, a cultural committee was created and in 1994 a cultural commission was set up to provide the cultural organization and events with structure and tools to work with.

The distinction of being named the Cultural Capital of Canada comes with a monetary contribution equal to the amount of financial help given for the development of artistic and cultural projects in the community.  The town of Caraquet has provided $500,000 for projects such as the auditorium, the art gallery and artists' studio in the brand new cultural center. Also receiving support will be the preparation for the 25th anniversary of the 'Tintamarre'.

The promotion office for arts, culture and tourism will also be established.  Its principal assignment will consist of supporting the committees involved in planning cultural activities and supporting their implementation.
